PLEASE MAKE ONE VOTE FOR TOM JACKSON!

Dear Friend of Cerritos College:

Thank you for the privilege of serving you the last four years on the Board of Trustees. I believe my record has demonstrated a high level of integrity and commitment to the college community. I would like to formally announce my candidacy for re-election to the Governing Board of Cerritos Community College.

As a retired Cerritos College faculty member, I taught primarily accounting/finance courses as well as management and marketing. My formal education includes an A.A. in Business, B.S. in Business/Accounting, B.S. in Business/Marketing, and an M.B.A. with a Management emphasis. My education combined with my work experience at Cerritos College and other former employers qualifies me for the position of a Governing Board member. Additional experience includes a two year term as Vice-President of the Long Beach Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, ten years as President of the Board of Trustees of Alpha Gamma Sigma, Inc., a non-profit California corporation chartered in 1926, to fund community college scholarships. Currently, I serve on the Boards of the Cerritos College Foundation, Los Angeles County School Board Association, and Turner Christian High School. I have served as a club advisor to numerous student organizations for over twenty years.

Cerritos College is currently governed by a dedicated and cohesive board of seven individuals, elected by the residents of the district. We may not always agree on every issue, but we do have the common goal of always looking for what is best for our diverse student population. Our College Administration, while relatively new (three years and less tenure), is developing into an efficient and effective leadership team. Voters of the Cerritos Community College District passed a General Obligation Bond in 2004. The administration, in addition to their demanding job of the day-to-day operation of the College, have undertaken the enormous task of renovating and transforming a fifty-year old campus to a new and modern state of the art institution of learning. The proceedings for renovation and construction must be approved by the Department of State Architects and other agencies which is always a long-drawn out process.

Shortly after my retirement from Cerritos College, (2002) I became involved in the campus transformation by being selected as a community member of the Bond Advisory Committee. In the meantime, I was elected to the Board and have continued to be involved with the transformation plan. I am looking forward to my continued involvement over the next four years.

I will continue to seek alternative sources of funds to expand, improve and develop new and existing programs at Cerritos College, such as Teacher Track, Automotive Alternative Fuels, Project Hope, Wood Manufacturing Technology, Allied Health programs, Adult Education and as many others as the community requires to meet the needs and desires of our students.

On a personal level, I was born and raised in Long Beach, attending Long Beach public schools, Long Beach City College, and Long Beach State College (California State University at Long Beach). I am also an alumnus of the University of Southern California. I served in the United States Coast Guard and am the parent of three children. My wife, Marie, a retired, long time classified employee of Cerritos College and I reside in Norwalk where we are active in our church and many community events.

Accomplishing my goal of four more years on your board will require a great deal of effort, time and money. I am asking all of my friends, neighbors, and former colleagues to help me in any way possible. Located on this website is a Response Form to download, print, and fill out to show how you will support my campaign and return to the indicated address. Any effort you make will be greatly appreciated in assisting me to attain this goal and will help to ensure a positive future for Cerritos College.

I will be happy to answer any questions, or if you would like to meet with me and just talk, you can call, e-mail or write me at the following addresses. Be sure to visit my website for additional information about me.

Thank you,

Tom Jackson

BOARD PRESIDENT TOM JACKSON
RECOGNIZED BY HONOR SOCIETY

Alpha Gamma Sigma Establishes Scholarship in Jackson’s Honor
Cerritos College Board President Tom Jackson was honored on Saturday, April 21 by Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), the California Community College Scholastic Honor Society, during its state convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

AGS presented Jackson with a Distinguished Service Award for his involvement and leadership in the society for the past 24 years. Jackson's recognition on April 21 marked the inaugural presentation of an AGS Distinguished Service Award.

AGS also established a scholarship in Jackson's name and presented it to Loretta Myers, a student from Las Positas College in the Bay Area. Myers plans to transfer to UC Berkeley with the goal of becoming a surgeon.

AGS was established in 1926 with the purpose of fostering, promoting, maintaining, and recognizing scholarship. The function of the state organization is to encourage local chapters to develop, in themselves or in cooperation with other chapters, programs offering cultural, social, or enrichment experiences as part of the total experience of community college students. The state organization annually awards scholarships to members and also encourages chapters to provide opportunities for participation in service activities and to award scholarships of their own.

The Greek letters Alpha Gamma Sigma stand for "Arete" meaning “Excellence," "Gnosis" meaning "Knowledge," and "Sophrosyne" meaning "Wisdom." The initials tie into the organization's motto, which is "Add to good character knowledge and judgment."

2003 BALLOT STATEMENT OF TOM JACKSON
CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNING BOARD
CERRITOS COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT

I have a vested interest in the future of Cerritos Community College District and am committed to maintaining a college that serves the community! As a retired full-time professor at Cerritos Community College District, I taught accounting, finance, marketing, and management classes for 22 years. Participation on numerous campus committees and involvement with student organizations as a club advisor for 20 years has made me very familiar with the college culture and daily operations.

As a community college graduate, I understand the importance of this educational opportunity. My primary concern is to ensure the college is meeting the needs of our diverse students as they pursue their educational goals, both academic and vocational, as well as adult non-credit classes.

Secondly, the Cerritos Community College District is facing continuing financial uncertainty. With my accounting/finance background, I know how to analyze budgets and will be fiscally responsible with the allocation of available funding.

Thirdly, I value the college's employees. Faculty, managers, and support staff play an integral role in the success of the college and its students. These essential employees need adequate support to carry out their duties.
