Alpha Gamma Sigma Establishes Scholarship in Jackson's Honor
Cerritos College Board President Tom Jackson was honored on Saturday, April 21 by Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), the California Community College Scholastic Honor Society, during its state convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

AGS presented Jackson with a Distinguished Service Award for his involvement and leadership in the society for the past 24 years. Jackson's recognition on April 21 marked the inaugural presentation of an AGS Distinguished Service Award.

AGS also established a scholarship in Jackson's name and presented it to Loretta Myers, a student from Las Positas College in the Bay Area. Myers plans to transfer to UC Berkeley with the goal of becoming a surgeon.

AGS was established in 1926 with the purpose of fostering, promoting, maintaining, and recognizing scholarship. The function of the state organization is to encourage local chapters to develop, in themselves or in cooperation with other chapters, programs offering cultural, social, or enrichment experiences as part of the total experience of community college students. The state organization annually awards scholarships to members and also encourages chapters to provide opportunities for participation in service activities and to award scholarships of their own.

The Greek letters Alpha Gamma Sigma stand for "Arete" meaning "Excellence," "Gnosis" meaning "Knowledge," and "Sophrosyne" meaning "Wisdom." The initials tie into the organization's motto, which is "Add to good character knowledge and judgment."
